Who We Help

PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder, affecting 10-15% of premenopausal women.  It is characterized by androgen excess (including excess testosterone) and ovulatory dysfunction. The cause of this syndrome is still unknown, but it has suspected genetic factors, as it tends to cluster in family trees. Acupuncture has been shown to effectively treat PCOS by assisting the body in carrying out the processes it is already designed to do

Acupuncture and herbs can help the body regulate ovulation and hormones that support a healthy menstrual cycle.

PCOS acupuncture

PCOS can cause symptoms such as:

  • irregular, prolonged or absent menstrual cycles

  • difficulty conceiving

  • absent or irregular ovulation

  • Irregular hair growth or loss

  • weight gain

  • insulin resistance

  • headaches

  • darkening of the skin

  • increased likelihood of:

    • type 2 Diabetes

    • depression

    • high blood pressure

Acupuncture and  Chinese herbs prescribed by an experienced herbalist can help treat PCOS by:

  • balancing endocrine function by activating and inhibiting specific sex hormones, such as LH (Luteinizing Hormone), FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), testosterone and many others

  • supporting and nourishing oxygenated blood flow

  • increasing energy

  • stabilizing mood and decreasing excitatory stress response

  • increasing positive outcomes by supporting allopathic fertility treatments already in place such as IVF and drug therapies

  • improving quality of sleep

Acupuncture

Current research demonstrates that the compounds isolated from herbs have shown beneficial effects for PCOS and when combined in an herbal formula can target both reproductive and metabolic defects simultaneously.

Treating PCOS with Chinese Medicine can be the first step to getting reacquainted with your body and your cycle. Acupuncture and herbs can help even those suffering with PCOS achieve less painful, more regular periods that don’t interfere with quality of life.

Traditional Chinese Medicine supports that one’s ability to conceive is neither static nor unchangeable. Conception relies on a carefully orchestrated sequence of hormonal and physical events in the human body. Any imbalance along the way can throw a wrench in the plan. In the case of those facing difficulties conceiving, many women are first referred to acupuncturists by their PCP or reproductive endocrinologist before beginning fertility treatments to stabilize the uterus, maximize oxygenated blood flow, and reduce stress. Choosing your fertility team wisely is of supreme importance.

Here at the Medicine Tree, we recognize each patient as a whole being that needs to thrive physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to realize their highest potential. We provides patients with comprehensive individualized care that considers each person’s specific lifestyle and goals for their health and wellness along their journey with PCOS.
